Lucid US Sells 975 EVs in May, Gravity SUV Registrations Unclear

Lucid Motors registered 975 vehicles in the United States in May, up from 820 in April, according to data released on Tuesday by Motor Intelligence.

The figures mark a 74.4% increase from the same month a year earlier, when the EV maker registered 559 vehicles and had yet to launch its second model, the Gravity SUV.

Motor Intelligence classifies vehicles under either “cars” or “trucks.”

For Lucid, the Air sedan is categorized as a car, while the Gravity SUV, which began customer deliveries earlier this year, is grouped as a truck due to its size—198.2 inches (5,035 mm) in length.

Of the 942 Lucid vehicles registered in March, 912 were listed as cars and 30 as trucks, indicating Gravity sales had begun.

In April, estimates showed only five trucks registered, with the remaining 815 units attributed to the Air.

In May, however, all 975 vehicles were classified as cars. It remains unclear whether Motor Intelligence has reclassified the Gravity as a car or if Lucid registered no Gravity units in the month.

The absence of recorded Gravity sales in May comes amid signs of a slow production ramp-up.

During the company’s first-quarter earnings call in early May, interim CEO Marc Winterhoff said Gravity’s launch had been delayed by supply chain bottlenecks but emphasized the company’s commitment to quality.

“While we encountered a modest supply chain bottleneck that had an impact on our timeline, the more important point is that we’re taking the time to get it right, not just getting it out,” Winterhoff told investors.

Despite the delays, Lucid said it remains on track to meet its full-year production target for the Gravity and recently began delivering the flagship Dream Edition.

“We now have line of sight to resolving the bottlenecks in Q2,” Winterhoff added. “A broader ramp-up is expected soon.”

Lucid’s second model was recently spotted testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany, with two prototypes bearing Munich license plates captured on video by the YouTube channel StateSideSupercars.

Lucid began taking reservations for the Gravity Grand Touring trim in November, with U.S. prices starting at just under $95,000 before fees.

Still, the sluggish rollout has prompted questions about production readiness. A source familiar with the matter told EV in April that higher-volume output was unlikely to begin before June or July.

To support early deliveries, Lucid shipped more than 600 semi-knocked-down Gravity units to Saudi Arabia during the first quarter.

These are completed at the company’s AMP-2 facility in King Abdullah Economic City, which is being upgraded to support full-scale manufacturing.

Adrian Price, Lucid’s senior vice president of operations, posted a photo on LinkedIn in May showing more than 50 Gravity SUVs lined up at the company’s factory in Arizona

“Our second shipment of Lucid Gravity SUVs is ready to depart our factory in Arizona for Saudi Arabia,” he wrote.
