Lucid Says Tesla Could Need 7 Years to Match Its 2025 Air Sedan’s Efficiency

Lucid Motors CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson unveiled a comparative chart on Friday showcasing the miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent (MPGe) results of the newly launched 2025 version of the Lucid Air sedan against three key competitors.

In mid-July, the luxury electric vehicle (EV) maker introduced the revamped Lucid Air Pure, the most efficient production car ever created.

The 2025 version of this model has set new benchmarks, achieving an impressive 5.0 miles per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and 146 MPGe.

Rawlinson commented on LinkedIn, emphasizing the significance of this achievement: “It’s interesting to place the significance of this into context by comparing Lucid Air with the most efficient versions of its competitor set, the Porsche Taycan, the Mercedes EQS and the Tesla Model S, and trace trends through respective production periods.”

The line chart shared by Rawlinson predicts that, should Tesla continue its current rate of progress, it will take the Model S approximately seven years to match the 146 MPGe achieved by the 2025 Air Pure sedan.

If Lucid also keeps the same rate of progress, the comparative chart shows that future models can achieve a MPGe value at about 165 in 2032.

Battery efficiency has been a focal point for the California-based EV maker, with Rawlinson repeatedly highlighting in interviews the benefits of integrating a lighter and more cost-effective battery—the priciest component of any electric vehicle—into each car.

“Efficiency is of critical importance in making a better, lighter, more spacious, longer-range vehicle, and directly impacts cost to manufacture. Therefore, efficiency is arguably the single most valid litmus of a company’s core EV technological capability,” Rawlinson added.

Lucid delivered 2,394 vehicles in the second quarter of the year, while producing 2,110 units. The company will reports its financial results on Monday after the market closing.
