Peter Rawlinson, CEO of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Lucid Motors, announced the start of pre-production for the company’s second model, the Gravity SUV, earlier this week.
Scheduled to start production “in late 2024,” the three-row 7-seater SUV will have, as one of its competitors, the R1S from the California-based EV maker Rivian.
In an interview with CarBuzz, Lucid‘s CEO revealed he already tested Rivian’s SUV and said he’s “not worried”.
Asked about the competition with Rivian, Rawlinson said, “You could say, ‘How is Rivian gonna respond?’ Because Gravity is gonna be the best SUV out there, and no one will be able to compete with it”.
“To me, product is king. Bring it on […], but I’ve driven R1S, and I’ve driven the Gravity. I’m not worried,” Rawlinson added.
Earlier this year, Rivian updated its R1T and R1S models with new infotainment, safety software, and other upgrades while the quad-motor powertrain increased from 835 to to 1,025 horsepower. The price starts at $75,900.
In the same interview, Rawlinson reiterated the company’s ambition to become a volume manufacturer and reach one million units sold per year. In the second quarter of the year, the company delivered 2,394 vehicles while producing 2,110 units.
Earlier today, the company announced it has entered into a non-binding supply agreement with Graphite One for anode active materials (AAM).
AAM are materials used in the anode of EV batteries where they play a crucial role in storing and releasing energy during battery charging and discharging cycles.
On August 5, Lucid will publish its second-quarter financial results and it is expected an update from the management on the annual production guidance.
Drone footage captured last Saturday by a Lucid enthusiast revealed approximately 800 vehicles parked in one of the parking lots of the company’s factory in Casa Grande, Arizona.
Earlier this month, the company introduced a new leasing incentive of $7,500 Air Credit for customers in the United States. This offer is in addition to the existing $4,000 bonus available for inventory vehicles.
