Lucid CEO Says Motor Intelligence Sales Data on Gravity Is ‘Totally False’

Marc Winterhoff, the interim CEO of EV maker Lucid Motors, said during Tuesday’s second-quarter earnings call that Motor Intelligence’s claim of zero Gravity vehicles delivered in July is “totally false.”

As reported by EV on Saturday, Motor Intelligence released its sales estimates for July, listing Lucid with 890 vehicles sold and zero trucks sold — the category under which the Gravity SUV is classified.

BNP Paribas analyst Jake Scholl questioned Winterhoff on the earnings call about Motor Intelligence’s July figures, while also asking for a second-quarter sales number for the new SUV.

“I was wondering if you could just quantify Gravity deliveries in the second quarter. And based on third-party data — which is admittedly unreliable — there were no deliveries in July. So, is there a hang-up, you know, like a quality issue with the Gravity delivery ramp, and when should we expect to see material volumes?” the analyst asked.

Winterhoff responded that the July figure claiming zero units sold is “totally false.”

“That number is false,” he stated. “And that’s all I want to say about that it’s totally false.”

The interim chief executive said the EV maker is “in the process right now of ramping up” production of its second model.

Earlier, Cox Automotive estimated that five Gravity vehicles had been sold during the second quarter — in line with Motor Intelligence’s figures for the April-June period.

“When it comes to number for second half, we are not disclosing this, but we’re definitely in the process right now of ramping up Gravity in the second half of this year,” Winterhoff stated.

“The Gravities will actually be the majority of our deliveries,” he added. Lucid currently sells two models: the Air sedan and the Gravity SUV.

The company’s third model is planned to launch in late 2026, with production ramping in 2027.

“But yes, going back to the July number, we saw that as well,” Winterhoff said. “But yes, it’s unfortunate that something like this is published.”

Earlier in the call, Winterhoff had also responded to a Say Technologies question regarding the number of Gravity orders.

“We don’t disclose the specific number of orders we’ve received,” the interim CEO replied.

“However, as I referenced in my prepared remarks, customers are now experiencing Lucid Gravity in our studios and we are seeing a high conversion rate once people see the vehicle for themselves.”

“We are happy with what we’re seeing and we remain supply constrained and not demand constrained. We expect the situation will normalize soon.”

Just before the call, in a LinkedIn post, the interim CEO said the SUV’s daily order rate has “nearly doubled” as display and test-drive vehicles arrive in showrooms.

The update came ahead of the second-quarter earnings call, with Winterhoff addressing the status of Gravity production in a social media post.

“We are not where we want to be with Lucid Gravity production relative to our target at this point,” Winterhoff wrote on LinkedIn, adding that he has “seen firsthand how our teams are working to overcome bottlenecks.”

The German executive said he remains “confident” that Lucid will “significantly increase production in the second half of the year.”

Despite the low figures, several customers have posted photos of their Gravity deliveries on social media over the past few months.

“More and more customers are experiencing the Lucid Gravity every day, and the response has been incredible,” Winterhoff said. “With vehicles now in studios nationwide, our daily order rate has nearly doubled.”

The interim CEO also praised the sound system of the SUV in his LinkedIn post.

“Once people experience Lucid, our technology, the driving feel, the range, it’s hard to compare,” he wrote. “And I would be remiss if I wouldn’t mention one feature I genuinely love, the Gravity’s Surreal Sound Pro system which makes you feel like you are sitting right in front of a stage.”

Lucid has been shipping Gravity display vehicles to showrooms across the country over the last few months. However, the production ramp-up has faced setbacks.

As exclusively reported by EV on April 2, a source familiar with the matter said April volumes would be “very small,” with meaningful output not expected until “June or July.”
