Lucid CEO Says Gravity Orders ‘Nearly Doubled’ Despite Production Issues

Lucid Motors said on Tuesday its daily order rate for the Gravity SUV has “nearly doubled,” even as the company continues to struggle with production delays for the electric model.

The update came ahead of the second-quarter earnings call, with interim CEO Marc Winterhoff addressing the status of Gravity production in a social media post.

“We are not where we want to be with Lucid Gravity production relative to our target at this point,” Winterhoff said, adding that he has “seen firsthand how our teams are working to overcome bottlenecks.”

The German executive said he remains “confident” that Lucid will “significantly increase production in the second half of the year.”

According to data released last Friday by Motor Intelligence, Lucid sold zero Gravity units in the US in July.

Earlier, Cox Automotive estimated that five Gravity vehicles had been sold during the second quarter — in line with Motor Intelligence’s figures for the April-June period.

Despite the figures, several customers have been posting their Gravity delivered across the US on social media over the last few months.

“More and more customers are experiencing the Lucid Gravity every day, and the response has been incredible,” Winterhoff said. “With vehicles now in studios nationwide, our daily order rate has nearly doubled.”

The interim CEO praised the sound system of the SUV later in the post.

“Once people experience Lucid, our technology, the driving feel, the range, it’s hard to compare,” he wrote. “And I would be remiss if I wouldn’t mention one feature I genuinely love, the Gravity’s Surreal Sound Pro system which makes you feel like you are sitting right in front of a stage.”

Lucid has been shipping Gravity display vehicles to showrooms across the country over the last few months. However, the production ramp-up has faced setbacks.

In early May, during Lucid’s first-quarter earnings call, Winterhoff acknowledged that Gravity’s rollout had been hampered by supply chain issues.

“While we encountered a modest supply chain bottleneck that had an impact on our timeline, the more important point is that we’re taking the time to get it right, not just getting it out,” he said at the time.

As first reported by EV on April 2, a source familiar with the matter said April volumes would be “very small,” with meaningful output not expected until “June or July.”

Lucid is scheduled to provide an update on Gravity’s production ramp-up during its second-quarter earnings call scheduled for 5:30 PM Eastern time.
