Lucid Motors’ interim Chief Executive Officer Marc Winterhoff admitted this week that the company’s anticipated second model, a luxurious SUV named Gravity, has faced delays due to supply chain issues, but maintained that Lucid remains on track to meet its 2025 production targets.
The model was first unveiled in November 2023 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Pre-production units rolled off the line eight months later, while final production units were completed eleven months after the initial debut.
Fast forward to Marc-April 2025, and according to data from Motor Intelligence, only 35 Gravity SUVs were registered in the U.S. in those two months combined — 30 in March and five in April.
“While we encountered a modest supply chain bottleneck that had an impact on our timeline, the more important point is that we’re taking the time to get it right, not just getting it out,” Winterhoff said during the company’s first-quarter earnings call earlier this week.
As EV exclusively reported on April 2, the carmaker has faced supply chain issues in ramping up production. A source familiar with the matter told EV back then that April volumes would be “very small,” and that higher-volume output likely wouldn’t begin until “June or July.”
According to U.S. vehicle registration data from Motor Intelligence, just five Gravity units were registered across the United States in April, down from 30 in March.
Answering a critical question from a retail shareholder, Winterhoff said Lucid now has “line of sight” to resolving the bottlenecks in the second quarter and has made plans to ensure it can still produce the number of Gravity units originally expected for 2025.
He added that the company recently delivered the first Gravity Dream Edition and that deliveries are ongoing, with a broader ramp-up expected “soon.”
Lucid began taking reservations for the Gravity Grand Touring trim in November, with prices starting just under $95,000, excluding fees. While customer deliveries are underway, signs of a limited initial rollout have emerged.
Lucid is preparing to send its second shipment of Gravity SUVs to Saudi Arabia, where partially assembled vehicles are completed at its AMP-2 facility in King Abdullah Economic City.
The company shipped over 600 Gravity units to the kingdom in the first quarter and is in the process of upgrading AMP-2 into a full production site.
Adrian Price, Lucid’s senior vice president of operations, shared a photo on LinkedIn this week showing more than 50 Gravity SUVs lined up at the company’s Arizona factory, captioned: “Our second shipment of Lucid Gravity SUVs is ready to depart our factory in Arizona for Saudi Arabia!”
In the U.S., the next production batch of Gravity SUVs is expected to be available in “four to eight weeks” and will include about 87 vehicles in black or green, according to a Reddit post from a customer citing a Lucid salesperson.
Winterhoff defended the company’s approach, noting that the Gravity’s launch pace has been faster than most in the industry. “Bringing a high-quality vehicle to market, especially one that we believe will be a long-term category leader, requires thoughtful execution,” he said.
“Our focus remains on delivering a product that meets the very high standards that our customers expect and that will drive long-term value for our shareholders.”
Commenting on the new round of interest test drives that can generate, Winterhoff said the company is “about to roll out” the units for the showrooms and test drives, saying Lucid is “basically delivering those cars as we speak.”
