The automaker Lotus has announced on Monday that its first electric hyper-GT model, Emeya, has set a record for charging speed using the public charging network.

In late April, Polestar shared that its upcoming model Polestar 5 successfully charged from 10 to 80 percent in 10 minutes using the extreme fast charging technology from the startup StoreDot.

In the test, the model charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 14 minutes, thanks to a 400-kW (600A capable) DC fast charger, making it “one of the fastest charging electric vehicles (EVs) available today,” Lotus said.

The Emeya, a fully electric four-door grand tourer, follows the launch of the electric Eletre SUV and shares similar high-performance features, including a dual-motor setup producing 905 hp and 985 Nm of torque. This powertrain allows the model to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 2.8 seconds.

According to Lotus, the charging performance of the Emeya is attributed to its cell-to-back battery structure, which allows for 20 percent more cells to be packaged in the same space compared to a standard module architecture. Additionally, the vehicle features a cooling system architecture designed to enhance the thermal performance and efficiency of the battery.

The result puts Emeya ahead of Mercedes EQS, BMW i7, Tesla Model Y, Genesis G80, Xpeng G9, Kia EVP, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Nio ET5, and BYD Atto 3.

This achievement was validated by the global consulting firm P3, which recently published its independent 2023 P3 Charging Index for Asia.

The report highlighted that the Emeya can reach a peak charging power of 402kW, with an average charging power of 331kW between 10 percent and 80 percent battery state of charge.

The Emeya’s WLTC energy consumption stands at 18.7kWh/100km, enabling it to gain up to 310km of range in 10 minutes.

Lotus and Nio announced this Thursday at the Beijing Auto Show the cooperation in charging and battery swapping technologies. The announcement came after Clive Chapman, the son of Lotus founder, visited the Nio booth earlier this week, where he explored the fourth-generation battery swap station.
