The Goodwood Festival of Speed kicked off on Thursday but not in a perfect way… at least for Lotus. The Lotus Evija X, a 2,011 hp hypercar priced at about $2.3 million, crashed into hay bales a few seconds after starting its run.
Thankfully, the driver of the Evija X escaped unharmed, and the track was quickly cleared.
The mishap occurred just months after the Evija X set the third-fastest lap ever recorded around the Nurburgring Nordschleife, clocking an impressive 6:24.
Here’s the video shared by the Goodwood event.
As one of the headliners at this year’s automotive celebration, the Evija X had high expectations to meet. The crash unfolded when the driver performed a customary burnout at the start line, generating a large plume of smoke.
However, as the tires spun, the hypercar suddenly veered to the right, slamming into the hay bales lining the track. Footage of the incident reveals extensive damage to the car’s front end, including a crushed clamshell, bumper, and various aerodynamic appendages.
Commentators at Goodwood have speculated that a computer software issue might be responsible for the crash. The event organizers are currently uncertain if Lotus will be able to repair the car in time for the remainder of the festival.
The automaker has recently announced that its first electric hyper-GT model, Emeya, has set a record for charging speed using the public charging network.
In the test, the model charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 14 minutes, thanks to a 400-kW (600A capable) DC fast charger, making it “one of the fastest charging electric vehicles (EVs) available today,” Lotus said.
