Herbert Diess, the former CEO of the Volkswagen Group and one of the most well known figures in the automotive industry, met with Nio’s founder and chief executive William Li in Shenzhen, China, on Wednesday.
In a video shared on the social media platform Weibo, Li asked Herbert Diess what impresses him about the Chinese EV startups. The executive highlighted the speed of development and the attitude to identify and adjust their plans when mistakes are made.
“I have to say a lot of things, many things. They are so energetic, they are so fast… they learn so fast. Some of them are really making mistakes, but they learn really fast and they rectify those mistakes,” Herbert Diess stated.
“I think they are very creative when it comes to different car styles, they are trying everything out. So I am really impressed by many of the startups,” Diess added without naming specific brands.

“Mr. Diess highly praised China’s new smart electric vehicle startups. Although the competition is intense and challenging, the way Chinese smart electric vehicle companies push each other to improve is making everyone better. Let’s continue to power up together!,” Li added.
