Detroit carmaker General Motors is laying off nearly 1,000 workers worldwide, most of them in the U.S., sources told Reuters on Friday.

The company informed employees on Friday of its third workforce reduction since August, following layoffs of over 1,000 employees in its software department and approximately 1,700 workers in September at a manufacturing plant in Kansas.

In a statement, the company confirmed the layoffs, “In order to win in this competitive market, we need to optimize for speed and excellence. As part of this continuous effort, we’ve made a small number of team reductions.”

At the end of last year, GM’s global salaried workforce numbered 76,000, including approximately 53,000 U.S.-based salaried employees.

Speaking at The Joe Rogan Experience podcast prior to the presidential election, the now elected U.S. President Donald Trump said “All those guys in Detroit are going to be out of business”.

In the episode, Trump stated, “When they say, ‘go electric,’ China will be the one supplying the cars,” Trump stated, suggesting that American automakers could be left behind. “All those guys in Detroit could be out of business. You’re going to make your electric cars over there,” he added.

Earlier this week, GM recalled 461,839 vehicles due to a transmission issue that could affect wheel functionality, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
