General Motors confirmed on Monday it is reducing over 1,000 salaried positions globally including about 600 jobs at its Detroit tech campus.

As of the end of 2023, General Motors had 76,000 salaried workers indicating that this reduction affects roughly 1.3% of the entire team.

In the second quarter of the year, General Motors delivered 696,086 vehicles in the U.S., representing a slight increase of 0.6% year-over-year. Its delivery figures for electric vehicles increased by 40% from a year ago to 21,930 units while total sales through the first half of the year were slightly lower — 0.4%.

The layoff mainly affects the software and services teams with the affected workers being notified on Monday morning, a GM spokesperson told CNBC.

“As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact,” the spokesman said.

“As a result, we’re reducing certain teams within the Software and Services organization. We are grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead moving forward,” the spokesperson added.
