General Motors is recalling 29,347 Cadillac Optiq electric SUVs because their front windows may not stop and reverse when they meet an obstruction while closing by key fob, the company told US regulators.
The recall covers the 2025, 2026 and 2027 model years, built from July 24, 2024, to September 22, 2026, and GM estimates that all of the vehicles have the fault.
“When the express-up feature on the front power windows is activated using the key fob, the windows may fail to stop and reverse automatically if they encounter an object during the final 13 mm of upward travel,” GM said in its filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
GM said it was not aware of any field complaints linked to the condition.
A Standards Failure
GM filed the recall on September 24 as a failure to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 118, which governs power-operated windows, rather than as a safety defect.
The standard requires windows that close automatically, such as with a one-touch command, to stop and reverse before it exerts a squeezing force of 100 newtons or more on a test rod placed in its path.
“If a power window fails to stop and reverse while operating the express-up feature from the key fob, there is an increased risk of injury to a person in its path,” GM said.
The recall includes 12,558 vehicles from the 2025 model year, 10,201 from the 2026 model year and 6,588 from the 2027 model year.
A Supplier Setting
GM blamed a calibration set by its supplier, Kwangjin America, of Warren, Michigan.
“GM’s supplier set the upper travel range of the anti-pinch protection too far below the upper header to consistently meet the stop and reverse requirements of FMVSS No. 118 when express-up is activated using the key fob,” the company said.
GM corrected the setting in production on September 22.
From a Dealer Report
The problem was first raised by a dealer.
On June 26, a GM brand quality manager reported to the company’s internal Speak Up For Safety program that a dealer had found the front windows on four 2026 Optiqs did not appear to stop and reverse properly when closed by key fob, according to GM’s chronology.
GM issued a preliminary information bulletin to dealers in North America on July 13 that described a wider problem.
“Customers may comment that the pinch protection in the front windows is inoperative when using the window switch express up feature, remote key, or app,” the bulletin said, blaming a “software anomaly.”
“Please continue to drive your vehicle with the understanding that pinch protection for the front windows is not sensing under certain conditions,” GM told dealers to advise customers while its engineers investigated.
GM’s closure hardware team tested five vehicles under the standard from July 8 to July 22, and four failed to stop and reverse consistently with key-fob express-up when the angle of the test rod was varied, the company said.
GM opened an investigation on July 28 and decided on September 17 to recall the vehicles.
The recall filing covers only key-fob closing and does not mention the window switch or the app.
The Fix
GM will update the front window calibration in the body control module, which raises the upper travel range of the anti-pinch protection, free of charge.
Owners of vehicles able to receive over-the-air updates, who have accepted GM’s terms, can install the fix wirelessly, and all owners can have it done at a dealer, GM said.
Dealers were notified on September 24, and owners will receive letters from November 9.
The Optiq’s Third Recall
The Optiq is Cadillac’s smallest electric SUV.
GM delivered 12,187 Optiqs in the US in 2025 and 7,083 in the first half of 2026, up 43.4% from a year earlier, its sales reports show.
The window recall is the Optiq’s third in NHTSA’s database, after a 2025 recall of 3,682 Optiqs over Continental tires that could lose their tread and a multi-model 2026 recall over owner’s manual software.
Ford recalled 47,818 Lincoln Nautilus SUVs in January 2025 for a similar FMVSS 118 failure, in which windows closed by the “global closing” feature did not reverse before exceeding 100 newtons, and fixed it with a calibration update.
