Volvo Cars is planning to launch its ES90 model in China, the model’s listing on the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) catalogue showed.
When the ES90 was unveiled nearly a year ago, Volvo said the sedan would “be available shortly in some of our key markets in the Asia-Pacific region” but did not specifically name China as a launch market.
In September, as production began, the brand said the ES90 would “also become available soon to some of our key markets in Asia Pacific.”
The MIIT filing confirms the model will be sold in China.
The new regulatory filing also listed the fully electric EX90 SUV, signalling the Geely-backed automaker’s intent to revive demand for its fully electric models in China.
The battery-electric (BEV) sedan was unveiled in Europe nearly a year ago and later expanded to other markets, including Thailand, South Africa, and Malaysia.
Last September, Volvo‘s Chengdu plant in China began production of the ES90 for the European markets.
Due to the European Commission’s October 2024 tariffs imposed on Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles, the model is subject to Geely‘s 18.8% levy.
Alongside the EX90 SUV, the ES90 sedan will be added to the brand’s Chinese all-electric lineup, which includes the EX30 crossover SUV and the EM90 premium MPV.
The regulatory filing also featured XPeng‘s luxurious six-seat SUV GX, Xiaomi‘s YU7 GT SUV, and the new Livis variant of the L9 SUV from the Beijing-based carmaker Li Auto.
ES90 Specs
The ES90 measures 5,000 mm in length, 1,942 mm in width, and 1,553 or 1,547 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,102 mm.
The model is available in Core, Plus, and Ultra variants.
The single-motor version delivers peak power outputs of 240 kW and 245 kW, while the twin-motor ones are equipped with 220 kW and 280 kW motors.
The fully electric sedan features 92.0 kWh and 106.0 kWh battery packs for the single-motor and dual-motor versions, respectively, reaching a maximum WLTP driving range of 679 km — equivalent to 422 miles.
With an 800V electrical architecture — the first Volvo model to feature it —, the ES90 delivers 300 km (186 miles) of range in only 10 minutes at 350 kW fast charging stations.
It can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds.
Currently, the sedan is priced from 913,000 Swedish kronor ($101,500) in Volvo‘s home country of Sweden.
Slumping Sales in China
Volvo experienced a sales decline in China last year, particularly for BEVs, prompting its portfolio expansion.
The Gothenburg-based automaker sold a total of 149,549 vehicles across all powertrains in the country, representing a 4.4% decrease from the 156,370 recorded in 2024.
Sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) more than doubled (115.7%) year-over-year to 24,624 units.
However, BEV figures nearly halved (46.1%) from 2024 to 2,342 registrations.
This powertrain suffered an even steeper drop in sales in the last month of 2025: 79.6% to 149 BEVs from the 729 recorded a year prior.
Globally, Volvo sales reached a new 47-month low in January, with 42,537 vehicles — the brand reported last week.
A day later, amid its fourth quarter earnings results, the brand’s stock suffered its worst day ever with a 22.5% plunge.
