Volvo Cars teased on Tuesday its upcoming premium electric midsize SUV, the EX60, set to be revealed in “early 2026.”
The EX60 will be the fully electric version of the XC60 — a plug-in hybrid model launched in 2017 and based on Volvo‘s Scalable Product Platform (SPA).
The XC60 was Volvo‘s best-selling model in 2024 and became on Wednesday the best-selling model from the brand in the company’s history — with over 2.7 million units sold since it debuted in 2008.
The EX60 is built on the SPA3 platform, which is “designed for longer range, efficiency and intelligent core computing,” according to the company on a LinkedIn post.
“SPA3 is designed to learn and adapt over time with new features and capabilities, helping redefine what it means to engineer, own, and experience a car,” Volvo said.
Tech chief Anders Bell told UK media outlet Autocar that the SPA3 is “100% electric and 100% Volvo Cars,” suggesting it is moving away from a collaboration with Geely.
“We’ve been able to remove all the old constraints of the combustion engine,” he added.
The Torslanda plant is being upgraded to manufacture upcoming models based on the SPA3 platform.
As it aims to reduce development costs, according to Motor1, the new architecture is set to be suitable for “vehicles of any size.”
The new platform will use a megacasting process to produce large sections of the car’s chassis as single aluminum pieces, replacing the assembly of many smaller parts. The technique was first introduced by U.S. brand Tesla.
The EX60 will follow the company’s move with the EX/XC30, a smaller SUV that ranked as one of the best-selling models in Europe, and the EX40/XC40. The seven-seater EX90/XC90 is also available in both powertrains.
In late April, Volvo Cars announced it had started producing the EX30 in its Ghent plant, in Belgium, adding to the manufacturing in Torslanda, Sweden.
The EX30 is based on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform. The EX40 is still based on the old combustion engine platform Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).
Volvo‘s EX90 and the premium Geely-backed Polestar 3 are based on SPA2.
Volvo sold 27,694 vehicles in Europe last month, according to data shared on Wednesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). It represented 2.5% of the market.
It remained the best-selling brand in Sweden with over 5,100 units sold, in a total of 29,252 — it had a market share of 17.7% in its domestic market.
