Polestar’s US Sales Slide Extends to 8 Months as China Tariffs Weigh on Lineup

Polestar sold 285 vehicles in the United States in February, nearly unchanged from January’s 280 units and roughly half the level recorded a year earlier, according to estimates published Tuesday by Motor Intelligence.

The result extends the Geely-backed brand’s streak of year-over-year declines to eight consecutive months, as tariffs on Chinese-built electric vehicles continue to weigh on a lineup largely produced in China.

Polestar recorded the steepest year-on-year decline when compared to the other pure EV makers.

Most of the company’s models are produced — or planned for production — in China leaving them exposed to those duties.

The Polestar 3 is manufactured in the United States, at a South Carolina plant operated by Volvo Cars.

More recently, Polestar began producing the Polestar 4 in Busan, South Korea, through a partnership with Renault Korea.

The first batch of vehicles from that plant was shipped to Canada late last year, however, it remains unclear when US shipments will begin (or whether they have already).

US Market

Compared to other EV makers in the US, Polestar has recorded the largest decline from a year ago.

Tesla remained a leader in the segment, despite a 12% decline compared to February 2025. The Elon Musk-led company sold 38,500 vehicles last month.

Rivian, which is preparing to launch its more affordable mid-size SUV this month, has recorded a 34% year over year plunge in vehicle registrations, with 2,700 EVs sold in February.

Lucid Motors, on the other hand, saw a 86% jump to 1,500 units, as the company ramps up production of its second model, the Gravity SUV.

The brand has recently shut down the online configurators for its Air and Gravity models, with an executive confirming that the 2027 model year vehicles are under preparation.

However, no further details were provided on the timing of the launch.

Polestar 2

According to Motor Intelligence, which breaks down between “cars” and “trucks,” Polestar sold just three Polestar 2 sedans last month, with the remaining 282 units being Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUVs.

The weaker Polestar 2 sales are explained by the removal of the option to configure the sedan in the US in April, as uncertainty grew around auto tariffs announced by Donald Trump.

The company sold all Polestar 2 inventory throughout 2025, with customers only being able to purchase pre-owned units from then on.

It remains unclear when or if the model will be reintroduced in the market.

Polestar 3

The Polestar 3, which is produced in Volvo’s South Carolina plant, is available for both configuration and immediate purchase.

Polestar recently unveiled a new version of its most expensive SUV, built on a 800V platform.

However, it is unclear when the new version will begin deliveries in the US, as the brand aims to start exporting it to the UK first.

While other markets display estimated delivery schedules in the online configurator, in the US the brand provides no timeline, instead directing customers to contact a retailer for delivery information.

The company has extended its Clean Vehicle Incentive up until the end of March, through which customers who finance any 2025 Polestar 3 can see the vehicle’s price reduced by $18,000.

For these contracts, the financing rate is set at 3.99%.

The entry-level Polestar 3 is priced from $67,500, a price lowered to $49,500 if considering the promotion mentioned above.

Polestar 4

The company unveiled the Polestar 4 SUV in late 2023, with deliveries starting in Europe in the third quarter of 2024.

In the US, orders opened in April 2024 — but the brand never delivered the model in the country.

The company opened orders for the 2026 Polestar 4 in the United States a few months ago, with a starting price of $56,400, and informed customers that previous orders would be updated for this iteration, with the price remaining unchanged.

Polestar also offers a Clean Vehicle Incentive of $10,000 and a $3,000 Loyalty Bonus for those who are switching from another Polestar model to a new SUV.

Upcoming Models

Polestar announced in mid-February its “largest-ever model offensive,” with the launch of “four new electric vehicles within three years.”

These include the refreshed Polestar 2 and 4 and the upcoming Polestar 6 roadster and 7 SUV.

The Polestar 5 debuted last year and is already available to order in Europe, with deliveries set to begin this Summer. However, it has not yet launched in the US.

With several upcoming models slated for production in China, the brand could face additional hurdles entering the US market.

In Canada, however, it may benefit from the recently signed trade agreement with China.

Ottawa recently began accepting import permits for Chinese-made EVs at a 6.1% tariff rate, replacing the 100% duty imposed in 2024.

Volvo and Polestar, both controlled by Geely, told Automotive News Canada in February that they were “assessing imports” from China.

The Polestar 6 roadster is expected to share its platform with the Polestar 5.

According to the company, the Polestar 7 will be prioritized over the roadster.

Polestar will partner with Volvo Cars “to have Polestar 7 manufactured in Kosice, Slovakia, in advance of the planned launch of the premium compact SUV in 2028,” it said.
