Polestar US Sales Tumble Over 60% in Q4 to Less than 1,000 Units

According to sales estimates published on Monday by Motor Intelligence, Polestar sold 380 vehicles in the United States in December, a 54% year over year drop despite the sequential increase.

This marks the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year declines, as the company restructures its portfolio in the country, which includes the launch of new iterations for both the Polestar 3 and 4 SUVs.

Despite sales being up month over month since October, fourth-quarter sales were still lower than the prior quarter, at only 980 units.

In the third quarter, when demand rose ahead of the EV tax credit deadline, Polestar registered 1,487 vehicles.

Still, these figures represented declines both year over year (38%) and quarter over quarter (-11%).

Contrary to the broader trend in the auto industry, Polestar recorded its strongest quarter of 2025 between April and June, listing 1,669 vehicles.

In 2025, according to Motor Intelligence, Polestar sold 5,747 vehicles in the US — a 26.8% tumble compared to the 7,859 EVs registered a year before.

Domestic EV makers, such as Tesla and Rivian, also saw a sales decline year over year last year, of 16% and 10% respectively.

Luxury brand Lucid Motors, on the other hand, set a new sales record.

Polestar 2

According to Motor Intelligence, which separates “cars” from “trucks,” Polestar sold just eight Polestar 2 sedans last month, with the remaining 372 units being Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUVs.

The weaker Polestar 2 sales are explained by the removal of the option to configure the sedan in the US in April, as uncertainty grew around auto tariffs announced by Donald Trump.

The company sold all Polestar 2 inventory throughout 2025, with customers only being able to purchase pre-owned units.

It remains unclear when or if the model will be reintroduced in the market.

Polestar 3

The Polestar 3, which is produced in Volvo’s South Carolina plant, is available for both configuration and immediate purchase.

Polestar announced in November that bi-directional charging is available to owners of its Polestar 3 SUV in California. The company will later extend the system to other US states.

The functionality is enabled for current Polestar 3 vehicles on the 400V electrical architecture, launched in 2022 and first delivered in June 2024.

Polestar recently unveiled a new version of its most expensive SUV, built on a 800V platform.

However, it is unclear when the new version will begin deliveries in the US, as the brand aims to start exporting it to the UK first.

From December 2, 2025, to January 6, 2026, customers who finance any 2025 Polestar 3 can apply for the Clean Vehicle Incentive, which reduces the vehicle’s price by $18,000.

For these contracts, the financing rate was set at 2.99%.

The entry-level Polestar 3 is priced from $67,500, a price lowered to $49,500 if considering the promotion mentioned above.

Polestar 4

Polestar unveiled the Polestar 4 SUV in late 2023, with deliveries starting in Europe in the third quarter of 2024.

In the US, orders opened in April 2024 — but the brand never delivered the model in the country.

The company opened orders for the 2026 Polestar 4 in the United States a few months ago, with a starting price of $56,400, and informed customers that previous orders would be updated for this iteration, with the price remaining unchanged.

Polestar also offered a Clean Vehicle Incentive of $7,500 to $10,000, depending on the payment method, up until January 6.

As of December 2, the Polestar 4, exclusively produced in Asia, was expected to be delivered in May-June 2026, according to the company’s website.

On January 6, the estimated delivery time is unknown, with the company only stating that the vehicle will be “delivered by retailer.” The same applies to the Polestar 3.

The company’s CEO Michael Lohscheller recently confirmed that production of the Polestar 4 has begun in South Korea.

“The Polestar 4s that are set to be delivered to customers starting in Canada are the first Polestar 4s manufactured at the Busan, South Korean factory,” he stated.

Last month, Renault Korea, with which the Sweden-headquartered brand has partnered in Busan, confirmed that the first models were shipped to North America.
