Polestar US Sales Fall 19% YoY in August, Motor Intelligence Estimates Show

Sales estimates published by Motor Intelligence on Wednesday showed that Polestar sold 570 vehicles in the United States in August.

Registrations from the premium brand under the Chinese Geely Holding Group increased sequentially by 5.2% but fell 19% from the 704 units recorded a year ago.

Polestar has sold 4,392 vehicles in the US market from January 1 to August 31, meaning registrations in the first eight months of the year were down 5.2% year over year (from 4,633 units).

According to Motor Intelligence, which separates “cars” from “trucks,” Polestar sold 40 Polestar 2 sedans and 530 Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUVs.

The brand removed the option to configure a Polestar 2 from its US website earlier this year, as uncertainty grew around auto tariffs announced by Donald Trump.

The Polestar 2 model is currently only available in the country as pre-owned units, as inventory units have sold out.

The EV maker unveiled the Polestar 4 SUV in late 2023, with deliveries starting in Europe in the third quarter of 2024. Orders for the SUV opened in the US in April 2024, however the brand never delivered the model in the country.

In early June, the Gothenburg-headquartered brand opened orders for the 2026 Polestar 4 in the United States, with a starting price of $56,400, and informed customers that previous orders would be updated for this iteration, with the price remaining unchanged.

Deliveries are planned to begin over the next few months.

Prices for the Polestar 3 were cut by $10,000 in the US, currently starting at $57,500. The company led by Michael Lohscheller began deliveries of the Polestar 3 model in the US and Canada last October.

Customers who chose to purchase the Polestar 3 SUV had a 0% interest rate on contracts with a term of up to 72 months, an offer previously introduced in July that was renewed during August.

The vehicle can be leased from $399 per month on a 27 month-contract.

Up until the end of September — when the EV tax credit is scheduled to end — customers can receive a $15,000 Polestar Clean Vehicle Incentive, the double of the $7,500 state credit.

The estimates for Polestar sales in August contradict a rush in demand ahead of the $7,500 EV credit deadline — set for September 30.

Tesla registered 55,500 vehicles last month in its domestic market, a record year to date, while Rivian saw a sequential sales increase of 14.8%, despite the year over year drop of 6%.

Polestar reported its financial results for the first half of 2025 on Wednesday, with operating losses more than doubling year over year to $1.10 billion.

The group posted a gross loss of $703 million, compared with a $23 million loss in the prior year.

In reaction to the results, Polestar shares plunged 17.3% on Wednesday to $1.10.

The premium brand announced it will launch its Polestar 5 model at next week’s IAA Auto Show in Munich, Germany.

The company recently became the official mobility partner and one of the main sponsors of the German football club Borussia Dortmund for the next three seasons.

Earlier this week, it also revealed it has partnered with Australian Olympic champion swimmer Kyle Chalmers.
