Polestar set a new sales record in the UK in March with 2,434 vehicles sold, industry data shows.
Compared to March 2024, sales jumped 203.11% bringing first quarter total figures to 3,695 units, up 184.7% year over year.
The company backed by China’s Geely Holding Group launched in the UK in late 2020, and has three models available in the market: the 2, 3 and 4.
Prices for the Polestar 2 sedan start at £43,160 ($56,900), while the SUV Polestar 3 begins at £69,910 ($92,200). Polestar 4 is priced from £58,000 ($76,500).
Until the end of June, Polestar customers in the UK can get a Polestar 2 for £399 per month with a £8,700 customer deposit and 0% APR, according to the company’s website.
UK Competitors
Tesla sold 7,164 vehicles in the UK in March, a 2.4% increase compared to the same month last year, according to industry data released on Friday. In the first quarter, the EV maker registered 12,474 cars in the UK — up 6% year over year.
China giant BYD sold 6,480 cars in March, up more than 700% year over year, a new record for the carmaker. First quarter figures reveal that its sales grew 625% in the country, with a total of 9,271 cars.
MG had a 22.75% increase in sales in March, with 15,876 units. The brand sold just above 24,6oo vehicles, up 6.5% from the same period last year. XPeng listed 36 vehicles in its first month in the market, as it officially launched in the UK in February.
Polestar in Europe
The EV maker registered 357 vehicles in Germany in March, matching its performance from the same month in 2024. For the first quarter, the company sold 855 vehicles in Germany, a 35.5% increase year-over-year.
In the Netherlands, 165 units were recorded in March — an 11% rise from last year. First-quarter sales totaled 439 cars, up 25% from the same period in 2024.
Switzerland saw one of the brand’s strongest gains, with March deliveries surging over 250% to 107 units. Quarterly sales reached 248 vehicles, more than triple the number from a year earlier. In Portugal, Polestar sold 65 cars in March, almost doubling the figures from March 2024. First-quarter sales hit 111 units, a 126.5% increase year over year.
The carmaker plans to enter the French market this summer, aiming to expand its European retail network to over 180 locations by 2027. It was previously banned in France due to a 2022 trademark dispute with Citroën over the similar logo design.
Global Sales
Polestar sold 12,256 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2024, reaching 44,851 units for the year, a decline from 52,796 in 2023.
The company recently postponed the release of its Q4 results to April, stating they will be published together with its full-year 2024 financial report. However, it was confirmed that its global first quarter results will be announced on April 10.
Tariffs
Polestar stop selling new Polestar 2 model from its US website in reaction to the recently announced US tariffs. The model is produced in China and is highly affected by the new duties from the U.S. Administration.
According to media outlet Electrek, the company later stated that “there are a select number of Polestar 2s in stock on select retailers” and that the priority in the US will be its other two models.
In reaction to the US tariffs, China announced a 34% tariff on U.S. imports from April 10. China’s Ministry of Commerce also stated that the country has resumed discussions with the European Union, amid global tensions.
EV Adoption in the UK
In March, the UK registered 69,313 fully electric vehicles (BEVs), a 27.63% increase compared to March 2024.
One in every five cars sold during this period in the UK was fully electric. Hybrid vehicles (HEVs) accounted for 15.7% of the market, while petrol and diesel cars still led with a 50% share.
Looking at the first quarter of 2025, BEVs represented 20.7% of total car sales. Altogether, new energy vehicles, including HEVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), made up 44% of the UK market.
