Polestar Sales in Germany Plunge 42% in May Despite EV Market Growth

Geely-backed Polestar registered 240 units in Germany last month, data from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) showed on Tuesday.

Polestar registrations dropped 42% year over year and 21% from the previous month, despite an overall increase in EV market share in Europe’s largest car market.

May was the second consecutive month of declining sales for Polestar in Germany, following a record high of 357 vehicles sold in March.

The company currently offers its three vehicle lineup in Germany, with Polestar 2 sedan’s prices starting at €48,990 ($55,600).

Polestar Germany currently offers a €4,000 bonus ($4,500) and 0.0% financing for all new or inventory orders of its Polestar 3 and 4 SUVs. Both offers are available until June 30.

The Polestar 3 is priced from €74,590 ($85,000) and the Polestar 4 begins at €57,900 ($65,700) after the deduction.

Polestar sold 134 vehicles last month in the Dutch market, its first sequential decline in 2025. The figures represented a 18.3% drop from a year ago.

In Sweden, however, the brand posted its best sales month year to date, with 613 vehicles sold — a 39% jump year over year and a 14.6% increase month over month.

Polestar currently operates in 27 markets globally and plans to grow its European retail footprint to more than 180 locations by 2027.

On Tuesday, the Gothenburg-based company announced that four members are exiting the Board of Directors by the end of the month.

German EV Adoption

In May, vehicle sales in Germany reached 239,297 units. Among these, fully electric vehicles (BEV) accounted for 43,060 units, representing an 18% market share — a 44.9% rise compared to the same month last year.

Hybrid vehicles made up 38.5% of the market, with 92,171 units sold, including 25,181 plug-in hybrids (PHEV).

Despite growing interest in electric and hybrid models, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles remained the most popular choice, with 103,027 units sold.

Volkswagen, the country’s best-selling brand, registered over 50,000 vehicles last month in Germany, its home market. BMW and Mercedes sold 20,354 and 21,788 units, respectively.

BYD led the market when it came to new energy vehicle (NEV) brands, with 1,857 hybrid and fully electric models sold during May — a new record in monthly sales in the country.

Last month, Tesla sold 1,210 vehicles, a 36.2% drop year over year. However, registrations for the U.S. brand increased by 36.7% from April.

XPeng sales dipped 10% to 186 vehicles from April. The brand entered Germany a year ago. Premium brand Nio registered 22 vehicles in May, three more than last month — but a sharp 37% drop compared to May 2024.
