EV maker Polestar said on Thursday it sold 12,256 units in the last quarter of 2024 taking its last year’s figures to 44,851. In 2023, the company had sold 52,796 vehicles.
A year ago, in January 2024, the company said it “delivered approximately 12,800 cars in the fourth quarter of 2023.” However, on Thursday’s report, the company informed that it has switched its metrics from ‘vehicle deliveries’ to ‘retail sales’ which avoids a year-over-year decline.
Measuring retail sales, Polestar said it increased year over year from 11,640 to 12,256 vehicles in Q4 2024 — a growth of 5.3%. Two years ago, in the last quarter of 2022, the EV maker reported 20,243 retail sales.

“To align more closely with sector convention, Polestar has amended its definition of global volumes, with the new definition being retail sales representing sales to end customers,” Polestar said in the report.
In 2024, total retail sales fell 15% to 44,851 units from 52,796. The EV maker said that the total order intake in the last quarter of 2024 “increased by 37.2% versus Q4 2023 and by 37.9% for the full year 2024 versus 2023.”
| Q4 2024 | Q4 2023 | Change (%) | |
| Retail sales | 12,256 | 11,640 | 5.3% |
| FY 2024 | FY 2023 | Change (%) | |
| Retail sales | 44,851 | 52,796 | -15% |
“The changes being made to our commercial operations are clearly having a positive impact, as we saw a 5.3% increase in retail sales and a 37.2% increase in order intake compared to the same quarter last year, creating a strong momentum as we enter 2025,” the company’s CEO Michael Lohscheller.
Next week, on January 16, the Geely-backed brand will release its Q3 2024 earnings results and provide “business and operational highlights.”
In Germany, the company saw a 49.4% drop in sales last year, with total registrations falling to 3,181 units from 6,288 in 2023, according to data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority.
Polestar’s rival Tesla saw a 41% drop in annual registrations despite seeing December’s registrations at 3,905 units — nearly doubling November’s figures. The Chinese EV makers Nio and XPeng recorded 31 and 99 units, respectively.
The company has recently appointed Jonas Engström as its new chief operating officer (COO). The executive replaces Dennis Nobelius, who left the Geely-backed brand in September 2023 after three years in the role.
