Polestar recalled 213 model-year 2025 Polestar 3 vehicles in the United States due to improperly secured rear seat backrests that could release during a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the affected SUVs, produced between October 2024 and September 2025, had only one of two nuts correctly tightened on the rear seat backrest striker bracket.
The defect could cause cargo to shift into the passenger cabin during a collision, increasing the risk of injury, the agency said. The vehicles fail to comply with federal seating system safety standards.
Polestar will inspect and repair affected vehicles at no cost. Owners are expected to receive notification letters on March 22.
Previous Recalls
The recall marks the sixth for the Polestar 3 in the US market since deliveries began in November 2024.
Previous issues included unexpected loss of drive power, a rearview camera display defect, electrical malfunctions from wire harness corrosion, a detached glass sunroof, and a detached hood wing bumper.
The Polestar 2 fastback has been subject to 32 recalls in the US, while the discontinued Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid was recalled six times.
US Sales
Last month, the premium carmaker delivered 280 vehicles in the US, according to data released by Motor Intelligence last week.
The figures represented a 44.6% drop from the 505 units registered a year prior.
The automotive data provider’s distinction between “cars” and “trucks” suggests that only three Polestar 2 fastbacks were delivered last month, while the remaining 277 units were of Polestar 3 and Polestar 4.
In 2025, Polestar sold a total of 5,747 vehicles in the US, representing a 26.8% fall compared to 2024’s 7,859 registrations.
In Europe, the brand’s sales fell 5% year on year in Sweden last month to 450 units while in Norway sales plunged by nearly 70%.
In Germany, Europe’s largest automotive market, registrations more than doubled surpassing 500 units.
In the UK, as the company prepares to begin deliveries of the new generation Polestar 2, sales rose by 43% in January.
Safety Tests
The Polestar 3 achieved the highest score in the ‘Executive Car’ class last year in Europe, the car safety agency Euro NCAP shared last month.
When testing it last July, the organization praised the model for setting “a new standard for child safety”, with performance “tantalisingly close to a perfect score.”
