Polestar Expands to France with Mixed Business Model

Polestar said on Wednesday it opened orders in France, becoming the 28th market for the Geely-backed electric vehicle brand.

The Sweden-based company will sell directly online and through Volvo Cars’ retail partners nationwide.

The partnership with Volvo means that Polestar customers can access more than 100 service points across the country.

Polestar France will be led by Stéphane Le Guevel, who stated on Wednesday that the brand has “an ambition to open up to ten sales points already in 2025 and accelerating even further in 2026.”

A dedicated retail store is set to open in Le Mans next month.

Despite being present in most major European markets, Polestar had been absent from France due to a trademark dispute with Citroën over its logo design in 2020.

The French brand won the case, arguing that Polestar’s logo resembled its iconic chevrons and could unfairly benefit from Citroën’s brand recognition.

As a result, the court ordered Polestar to pay €150,000 in damages and banned the use of its logo in France for six months. Since the company sold directly to consumers through its website, sales in the French market were halted.

However, the ban remained in effect until 2022, when the dispute was finally resolved after Citroën withdrew its complaints.

The Polestar 2 sedan is priced from €46,800 ($53,500) at its standard version. The model also features a long range version — the Single Motor iteration starts at €49,800 ($56,900), while the Dual Motor version begins at €54,800 ($62,600).

The Polestar 4 SUV starts from €61,800, equivalent to $70,600. The Dual Motor iteration is priced from €69,800 ($79,800).

The most expensive model in the portfolio, the Polestar 3, is priced from €79,800 ($91,200). With the Dual Motor and the Performance pack, the vehicle starts at €91,800 ($104,900).

Sales in Europe

Polestar registered 2,648 vehicles across its eleven European markets in May, an increase of 13.6% year over year. Sales rose 56.4% from April.

The United Kingdom is the brand’s largest market in Europe, representing 44.3% of its total sales in the continent last month, with 1,174 EVs — a 273.9% surge year over year.

The Gothenburg-based brand sold 613 EVs in Sweden last month, a 39% jump year over year.

Polestar plans to grow its European retail footprint to more than 180 locations by 2027.
