Polestar Expands Smart Charging Rewards Across Europe

Premium EV maker Polestar is expanding its ‘Polestar Energy’ service with grid rewards in Germany and France.

The company is offering EV owners savings of up to €300 ($354) per year on home charging costs through a partnership with energy provider Octopus.

The company said on Wednesday that grid rewards have been expanded into France and Germany, joining Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom where the feature was already available.

The programme, developed in partnership with UK-based renewable energy company Octopus Energy, pays users for allowing their vehicle to support grid stability through smart charging — shifting charging sessions to off-peak periods when electricity is cheaper and renewable supply is typically higher.

In Germany, Polestar said owners using an Intelligent Octopus energy contract can reduce home charging costs by up to 50% per session, translating to annual savings of approximately €300.

“By unlocking savings of up to €300 per year, we are significantly reducing electricity costs for our customers at a time when energy prices remain high and grid stability is a growing concern across several European markets,” said Olivier Loedel, Polestar‘s head of product software management.

Car-Controlled Smart Charging

Polestar also introduced car-controlled smart charging for the Polestar 2 fastback and Polestar 4 crossover through its Polestar Energy app across all 12 European markets.

The feature eliminates the need for a specific integrated home charger. Instead, the vehicle manages charging times based on energy price signals, household demand, and grid conditions — removing what Polestar described as one of the biggest barriers to smart charging adoption.

The EV maker said smart charging also reduces the carbon footprint of a vehicle’s use phase by optimising for low-price electricity periods, which tend to coincide with higher renewable energy generation on the grid.

Charging Updates in Europe

Earlier this month, Polestar added Plug & Charge to more than 28,000 charging stations across Europe.

The brand also integrated Tesla‘s Superchargers into its ‘Polestar Charge’ app, giving its users access to over 20,000 of the US giant’s charging stations in over 1,500 locations.

With over one million charging points, the platform represents one of the largest charging networks in the Old Continent.

Polestar Energy Background

In 2024, Polestar began testing its home-charging service in the UK and the Netherlands.

In January 2025, Polestar Energy was officially launched in the UK, closely followed by an expansion into 12 more nations: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

At the time, the system allowed users to schedule charging through the Polestar Energy app and combine smart home charging with partner home chargers and tailored energy tariffs.

Last November, the company introduced both vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) capabilities to the Polestar 3 crossover SUV in California, enabling cars to feed energy back to the grid.

European Sales

In January, Polestar listed around 2,899 vehicles across its 16 European markets, according to data compiled by EV based on the national registration agencies and the EU-EVs data platform.

Sales rose by 14.6% from the 2,529 registrations in January 2025, while they halved (50.7%) compared to December’s result: 5,878 units.
