Polestar Becomes First Brand to Roll Out Google’s Live Lane Guidance

Polestar announced on Thursday that it has begun rolling out its Google Maps live lane guidance in the Polestar 4 model in the United States and Sweden.

The new feature was previously announced late last year with the Geely-owned brand saying it would arrive on the first Polestar EVs “in the coming months.”

In a LinkedIn post, the premium electric vehicle maker detailed the “new navigation experience”.

“Using AI-powered, real-time analysis from the car’s forward-facing camera, the system understands which lane you’re in and guides you through complex highways, interchanges, and dense traffic with clear visual and audio cues, helping ensure you’re positioned correctly well before decisions need to be made,” Polestar wrote.

With its launch, the brand becomes the first one to integrate Google Maps’ live lane guidance feature directly into the driver display of its vehicles.

Polestar 4 owners in the US and Sweden are required to update their vehicle’s software version to 4.2.9 or 4.2.10.

The company said late last year that more markets would follow.

Google Partnership

Amid announcing the feature’s rollout, Polestar said that this serves as “another example of how [its] collaboration with Google continues to bring new capabilities that enhance the driving experience over time.”

The partnership began exactly eight years ago when the Gothenburg-based EV brand first announced that its Polestar 2 would use Google’s Android Automotive OS.

Unveiled in February 2019, the model began integrating the tech giant’s in-car software —including Android Automotive OS, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play Store — in July 2020.

In January 2024, at the CES, both companies showcased new Google automotive features for Polestar‘s models, such as Route Send‑to‑Car and Google Chrome In‑Car.

Last November, Polestar and Google announced that the AI voice assistant Gemini would be implemented in all the EV models through a future update.

The system was exhibited in the Polestar 5 grand tourer at the world’s largest startup event, Slush.

The company led by Michael Lohscheller is expected to start replacing Google Assistant with Gemini across its lineup this year via an OTA update.

US and Sweden Sales

In January, vehicle registrations stood at 280 units in the US, estimated sales released by Motor Intelligence earlier this month showed.

The figures represented a 44.6% drop from the 505 units recorded in the first month of 2025, when the US Administration had not yet cancelled the $7,500 EV Tax Credit.

Motor Intelligence’s distinction between “cars” and “trucks” indicates that only three Polestar 2 fastbacks were delivered last month, while the remaining 277 units were of Polestar 3 and Polestar 4.

In Sweden, Polestar sales jumped by 28% in 2025 to a total of 7,594 vehicles.

In January, Polestar sold 2,899 vehicles across its 16 European markets, according to data compiled by EV based on the national registration agencies and the EU-EVs data platform.
