Ford to Cut 4,000 Jobs in Europe Over the Next 3 Years

Ford Motor Co. said on Wednesday it plans to cut 4,000 jobs in Europe over the next three years, primarily in Germany and the UK, as it addresses weak EV demand, rising competition, and insufficient government support.

Last month, Ford reported its third quarter earnings results, revealing a $1.2 billion loss in its electric vehicle (EV) unit. Sales for its Model e division declined by 11% during the quarter.

Most of the job reductions — about 3,000 — will focus on operations in Germany, with smaller cuts — 800 workers — in the UK and limited changes in other European markets. In total, the reduction will affect 14% of Ford’s teams in the continent.

“It is critical to take difficult but decisive action to ensure Ford’s future competitiveness in Europe,” Dave Johnston, Ford’s European vice-president.

The company has urged this Wednesday Germany and the broader European region to take stronger action to support the EV transition, as initially reported by Bloomberg.

Separately, Ford halted production of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup last week, with plans to resume operations in early January. The company sold 22,807 units of the F-150 Lightning in the first nine months of the year.

Ford’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in the third quarter totaled 23,400 units, with September U.S. sales reaching around 6,300 units, down 18% from the previous year.
