Cybertruck US Sales Plunge in Q3 While Rivals Rise

Nearly two years after deliveries began, the Tesla Cybertruck saw US sales decline in the third quarter compared to the same period last year.

At the same time, deliveries of domestic electric pickup competitors continued to grow.

According to quarterly data released by Cox Automotive, the model represented 5,385 of Tesla‘s 179,525 vehicles sold from July through September.

Compared to the third quarter of 2024, sales have plunged by 62.6% — from 14,416 units. Year to date, the decline reaches 38%.

Between January 1 and September 30, Tesla sold 16,097 Cybertrucks, just 2,000 units above the third quarter of 2024 alone (three months).

Earlier this year, the company launched a more affordable version of the Cybertruck in both the US and Canada.

However, just five months after its long-awaited debut, the company has discontinued production of the trim in September.

Just a month before, Tesla introduced the ‘Luxe Package’ on both its flagship Model S and Model X, and included it in the Cybertruck a few days later.

The package — now included as standard on all trim levels — has increased the vehicle’s price by more than $10,000. It includes Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, free lifetime Supercharging, and free Premium Connectivity.

Despite several incentives introduced in recent months — including 0% APR financing for buyers who purchased the model with FSD before the ‘Luxe Package’ was introduced — sales remain below expectations.

In 2023, Tesla‘s CEO Elon Musk projected an annual production rate of 250,000 units “probably sometime in 2025.”

Earlier this year, a recall involving more than 46,000 units due to a defect in the cantrail trim piece further hindered the model’s sales performance.

In the third quarter, the Cybertruck held a 1.2% market share in the US, while the Ford F-150 Lightning achieved a 2.2% share.

Ford registered 30,612 EVs in the US between July and September, of which 10,005 were the electric pick-up.

The figures increased 39.7% from 7,162 units in the same period a year ago.

Year to date, sales of the F-150 Lightning are 1% up — at 23,034 units.

General Motors‘s Chevrolet sold over 39,000 electric vehicles in the third quarter. Over 25,000 of them were the Chevy Equinox SUV.

The Chevy Silverado pick-up truck represented 3,940 of the brand’s total sales, nearly doubling from a year ago. From July through September 2024, the company sold 1,995 Silverado pick-ups.

In August, GM‘ 2026 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck beat the world record across all vehicle types by delivering 1,704.6 km (over 1,000 miles) on a single charge.

The GMC Sierra, launched in late summer 2024, accounted for 3,374 units sold under GM’s truck-focused GMC brand in the last quarter.

Tesla‘s rival EV maker Rivian has registered 13,201 vehicles from July 1 to September 30. Of those, 2,378 were R1T pick-ups, representing a 13% year over year growth.

The R1S SUV accounted for 8,184 vehicles, more than doubling from a year ago. The company also registered 2,639 new electric delivery vans.
