If someone had said ten years ago that a tech ranking evaluating all car makers would have two Chinese companies on the podium, few would have believed it — especially considering that these two brands, Nio and XPeng, were themselves founded only in that same year.
According to the Gartner Digital Automaker Index 2024, Tesla maintained the lead with an overall score of 76.9 per cent despite the slip from last year’s of 4 per cent. The study assesses 22 automakers across nine categories and analyzes 13,919 data points.

The Shanghai-based EV maker Nio and XPeng followed with 71.2 per cent and 66.8 per cent respectively with both improving from last year.
Among the top ten, BYD, Rivian and XPeng saw the biggest increases with General Motors registering the biggest drop (13.3 per cent) to 39.9 per cent and the 9th place in the ranking.
China’s giant Geely ranked sixth place behind Lucid Motors with 47.2 per cent, an increase of 10 per cent from a year ago.
Volkswagen registered the sharpest decline and saw its score fall 18 per cent to 35.2 per cent. In June, amid the announcement of the investment in the Irvine-based EV maker Rivian, Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume said the customers will “benefit from the targeted partnership to create a leading technology architecture.”
In an interview with Automotive News, Gartner analyst and one of the creators of the study, Pedro Pacheco, said Tesla is “starting to show some shortcomings in the connectivity category because they still don’t have 5G, they still haven’t moved into satellite connectivity and the user score for their app is deteriorating”.
