BYD said Tuesday its March vehicle sales rose both year over year and sequentially to 377,420 units. The figures, which represent a 24.8% year over year increase, include 72,407 passenger cars and pickups sold overseas — a new record for the China giant.

The company’s total NEV production for the month stood at 395,091 units, up 72.6% year-on-year. Of those, 388,877 were passenger vehicles, including 187,599 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and 201,278 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Commercial vehicles totaled 6,214 units.

For the first quarter of the year, BYD sold 986,098 vehicles of which 416,388 were fully electric. The company aims to reach 5.5 million vehicles sold this year including 800,000 outside China as its global expansion continues.

Sales under the Dynasty and Ocean series reached 350,615 units in March (up 22.3% year over year), while the Fangchengbao premium off-road brand delivered 8,051 vehicles.

The premium brand Denza sold 12,620 vehicles while the ultra-luxury brand Yangwang recorded 133 units. Denza is planned to arrive in Europe later this year with details on the market launch still unknown.

For the first quarter of 2025, BYD’s cumulative NEV sales reached 620,255 units, compared with 388,344 units in the same period last year — a 59.8% increase.

In terms of battery capacity, the company said its installed capacity of NEV power batteries and energy storage batteries was about 20.35 GWh in March, bringing the year-to-date total to roughly 52.55 GWh.

Financial Times reported earlier this month that China is delaying approval for BYD’s car plant in Mexico over concerns that the company’s tech can “leak across the border to the United States.”

U.S. President Donald Trump announced last week that his administration will impose a 25% tariff on foreign-made vehicles and auto parts, escalating trade tensions with other markets.

Less than 24 hours later, Ferrari became the first automaker to respond, announcing price increases of up to 10% on some models to offset the impact of the upcoming tariffs.
