Swedish sales of BYD vehicles fell both sequentially and year over year in April, according to new data shared by Mobility Sweden.
The Chinese carmaker sold 50 vehicles in the Scandinavian country, a 48.5% drop from the 97 units sold last year. Compared to March, when deliveries reached 118 vehicles, sales plunged 57.5%.
Year to date, BYD sold 334 vehicles in the Swedish market, including both hybrid and fully electric vehicles. In 2024, the brand had sold 346 vehicles in the first four months of the year.
The brand entered Sweden and Germany in late 2022, in a partnership with the one of Europe’s largest dealers ‘Hedin Mobility Group’. Although both parts decided to adjust its partnership in the German marketlast Summer, Hedin remained ‘Dealer+’ and retailer in the Swedish market.
There, it offers its BYD Seal U DM-i, a plug-in hybrid model, with prices starting at SEK 499,900 ($51,800), and its Seal U fully electric SUV, priced from 544,900 ($56,500). According to the website, current interest rates stand at 0% on the Seal U DM-i model while the rest of the lineup has a 0.95% rate.
The brand’s city compact, the Dolphin, starts from SEK 439,900 ($45,600), and its entry-level SUV, the Atto 3 compact SUV, is priced at SEK 484,900 ($50,300).The BYD Seal sedan’s prices begin at SEK 589,900, equivalent to $61,200.
In April, two out of three cars sold in Sweden were new energy vehicles (NEVs). Out of 27,519 vehicles, 9,283 were battery electric vehicles (BEV), representing a 33.7% market share. The 9,328 hybrids, including plug-in hybrid vehicles, had a similar market share of 33.9%.
Competitors
The country’s best-selling model is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Volvo XC60 SUV, with over 2,000 units registered. Volkswagen‘s ID.7 is the best-selling EV in the country and the second best-selling model overall, with almost 1000 units.
Tesla’s sales plunged 81% in April in Sweden, with 203 vehicles. A year earlier, the U.S. brand had recorded 1,052 EVs and its Model Y, in its previous iteration, was among the best-sellers. The refreshed Model Y was launched in Europe in March, and it sold 170 units last month in Norway.
Polestar, backed by China’s Geely Holding Group but headquartered in Sweden, sold 535 vehicles in April, up 12% year over year. Guangzhou-based XPeng sold 98 units, a 63% surge year over year.
In the premium sector, Zeekr registered 82 vehicles, while its main competitor Nio’s registrations sank 87% from March to April to just two units.
April Results
BYD Group delivered 380,089 vehicles in April, with over 50% being fully electric vehicles. The brand’s BEVs outsold hybrid models for the first time ever.
Sales outside China also reached a new record, with over 78,000 units. In Europe, registrations also dropped in the Dutch market (by 1%) to 268 units in April. However, Norwegian sales increased 40.5% to 399 units, marking the strongest month in the past two years.
The company’s first production plant in Europe, located in Hungary, is set to start production in the second half of the year. BYD is also planning to launch manufacturing operations in Turkey next year.
The carmaker aims to sell 5.5 million vehicles this year, including 800,000 overseas. By the end of April, it had sold about 1.34 million, reaching 25% of its target.
