Chinese automaker BYD registered 1,393 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the UK in November, a 422% surge from a year earlier allowing the company to set a new monthly record in the market. The Shenzhen-headquartered brand reached last month its annual sales target of 3.7 million vehicles after delivering more than half a million passenger cars for the second consecutive month.

BYD’s overall market share in the UK reached 0.91% in November, up from 0.54% in October.

From January to November, over 338,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered in the UK, up 17% from nearly 287,000 in the same period in 2023, according to official data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Registrations of petrol and diesel vehicles fell by 10% and nearly 18% year over year, respectively, during the month. One in four cars sold in the UK in November was electric, with overall registrations supported by price reductions as manufacturers sought to meet emissions targets.

Tesla’s registrations in November rose 177% from a year ago to 4,558 vehicles. At the third quarter earnings call, the company’s CEO Elon Musk said he estimates “a slight growth” in vehicle deliveries globally in 2024. The company is expected to reveal the upgraded version of the Model Y, the world’s best-selling car, in early next year. Polestar saw its registrations rise 16% from a year ago to 672 despite the 12% decline from October.

Globally, BYD sold 198,065 battery electric vehicles globally, up 4.46% sequentially, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 305,938 units, a slight decline of 1.60% month-on-month.
