Chinese giant BYD‘s registrations in Germany nearly tripled year over year in June to 1,675 vehicles, despite a slight sequential drop.
Data shared by Germany’s KBA this Thursday showed that it was the third best sales month ever for the Shenzhen-based company in the country.
In May, the brand had sold 1,857 plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles in the German market — its highest sales figures year to date.
BYD achieved its best monthly sales in August 2023 with over 2,000 vehicles. From September 2023 through April this year, the brand’s monthly sales had remained below 1,000 units.
The world’s largest new energy vehicle (NEV) brand entered Sweden and Germany in late 2022, in a partnership with the ‘Hedin Mobility Group’.
However, both parts adjusted the collaboration in the German market last summer. The dealer group transferred its two pioneer stores in Stuttgart and Frankfurt to BYD, while remaining an authorized dealer in other locations in the country.
BYD first entered Germany with its Atto 3 and Tang SUVs, currently selling from €37,990 ($44,500) and €75,000 ($87,900) respectively.
The company offers mostly battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the country, with just one hybrid model.
The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Seal U DM-i’s prices starts at €39,990 ($46,900), a cheaper version of the fully electric Seal U, with prices beginning at €42,990 ($50,400). In the same series, the Seal sedan’s prices start at €46,990 ($55,100).
Late last year, BYD launched its Sealion 7 SUV, priced at €49,990 ($58,600) in Germany. Earlier this year, the compact sport-utility Atto 2, specifically tailored for the European market, was unveiled.
The Atto 2 is the carmaker’s cheapest model in the German market, with prices originally started at €31,990 ($37,500).
The city compact Dolphin is also available in the country from €32,990 ($38,700). During May, BYD launched its Dolphin Surf model in Europe, with prices starting from €22,990 ($26,900) in the German market.
BYD was outperformed by Tesla last month when it comes to new energy vehicle (NEV) brands. The U.S. brand sold 1,860 electric vehicles in Germany.
Regarding other Chinese automakers, BYD led the market. XPeng registered 240 vehicles, a new sales record since it entered the market a year and a month ago.
Geely-backed Polestar sold 517 units, a record since mid-2023, and Shanghai-based Nio saw a 63.6% drop year over year to 16 units.
Volkswagen was the best-selling brand in Germany last month, with over 48,000 vehicles. BMW and Mercedes followed with more than 22,000 units each.
Germany’s BEV registrations last month accounted for a 18.4% market share, up 8.6% from the same period last year. From the total 256,193 vehicles sold in the country, 47,163 were fully electric.
Hybrid vehicles represented 38.6% of the market, while internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles remained the top-selling powertrain among German consumers, with a 42.4% share.
In the first half of 2025, BEVs increased 31.8% year over year, while ICE vehicles were down 27.8%.
