BYD delivered 399 vehicles in Norway in April, marking the strongest result since December 2022 — data published on Monday by the Norwegian Road Federation showed. Back then, the Shenzhen-headquartered company registered 935 vehicles.
The figures represent a 40.5% increase from the 284 units sold a year earlier and a 22% rise compared to March sales, which totaled 327 units.
The China giant sold a total of 1,140 EVs in the country year to date. In comparison, last year BYD needed six months to deliver the first 1,000 units.
Norway is (by far) the world’s leading country in EV adoption, with electric vehicles representing 97% of the market in April (about 10,950 out of the 11,286 cars delivered).
The Chinese brand announced its expansion to Norway in 2020, in a partnership with local distributor RSA. The first model to be launched in the European market was the seven-seater Tang, with deliveries starting in mid-2021.
Although BYD‘s portfolio features both hybrid and battery electric (BEV) models, the brand’s lineup in Norway is fully electric — including its city compact Dolphin, priced from NOK 299,900 ($28,900), and the entry-level Seal U and Atto 3 SUVs, with prices beginning at NOK 399,900 ($38,600).
The Seal sedan and Sealion 7 family SUV are priced from NOK 469,900 ($45,300), while Tang, the brand’s debut model in the Nordic market, is currently priced from 699,900 ($67,500).
Competitors
Tesla‘s Model Y SUV is the best-selling model year to date in the Nordic market. It sold 869 units in April, and Volkswagen followed with 724 ID.4’s.
Volkswagen is the top-selling brand in Norway year to date, with over 7,000 vehicles sold. Tesla follows with 4,793 units sold year to date.
When considering only Chinese brands, XPeng’s sales rose 190% to 333 vehicles in April, while Polestar deliveries surged about 150% to 228 units. In the premium EV sector, Zeekr sold 97 EVs and Nio 29, which represented a plunge of 55% year over year.
April Results
BYD Group delivered 380,089 vehicles in April, in which 51.5% were fully electric vehicles, outselling hybrid models for the first time ever.
Sales outside China also reached a new record, with over 78,000 units. In Europe, contrarily to Norway’s results, Swedish deliveries fell 48.5% to only 50 units, and registrations in the Dutch market dropped 1% to 268 units.
The company’s first production plant in Europe, located in Hungary, is set to start production in the second half of the year.
Last week, the BYD ‘Shenzhen’ — the world’s largest car carrier ship — departed from Jiangsu, setting sail to Brazil. The ship carries over 7,000 NEVs and it is expected to reach the Itajai Port in about four weeks.
The company set a global goal of 5.5 million vehicle sales for this year, including 800,000 units overseas. Having sold nearly 1.34 million vehicles worldwide by the end of April, the brand completed 25% of the guidance.
