BYD sold 754 vehicles in Norway in June, its highest monthly total since December 2022, when the Chinese carmaker registered 935 units.
Figures released on Tuesday by the Norwegian Road Federation showed a year-on-year increase of 450.4%, up from just 137 vehicles in June 2024. Sales also rose 45.8% from May, when BYD registered 517 units.
The company has sold 2,411 fully electric vehicles in Norway in the first half of the year.
BYD is a leader in new energy vehicle sales, with battery electric vehicles (BEV) having only outperformed its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales recently.
In Norway, the world’s leading country in EV adoption with a 96.9% electric share in June, the brand’s lineup only includes BEV models.
BYD announced expansion to Norway in 2020, and started deliveries of its Tang SUV in 2021. The brand’s debut model in the Nordic market is currently priced from 699,900 NOK ($69,300).
BYD’s Seal sedan and Sealion 7 family SUV start at NOK 469,900 ($46,500), while the entry-level Seal U and Atto 3 models are priced from NOK 399,900 ($39,600).
The Sealion 7 ranked as the fifth best-selling model in Norway in June, accounting for 604 units — or 80.1 per cent of the brand’s total registrations for the month.
In effect, four out of every five BYD vehicles registered in Norway last month were Sealion 7s.
The Dolphin city compact is priced from NOK 299,900 ($29,700). BYD recently launched its cheapest model in Europe, the Dolphin Surf. However, it is not yet available in the Norwegian website.
BYD delivered 377,628 passenger vehicles across the globe in June, including 206,884 BEVs.
Sales outside of China reached 90,049 units, a new record for the seventh consecutive month — more than tripling from the 26,995 vehicles registered overseas a year before.
In Sweden, where BYD sells both hybrid and fully electric vehicles, it registered 206 units last month — more than doubling from the 76 units it had registered in May.
The Shenzhen-based automaker was the ninth best-selling brand in Norway last month, with Geely-backed Polestar ranking eighth and XPeng ranking 15th.
Polestar sold 774 vehicles in Norway last month, while XPeng recorded its best sales month in the market since its debut three years ago, with 346 units.
Up until May, Volkswagen took the lead. In June, however, Tesla surpassed the legacy automaker. The U.S. brand sold 5,646 EVs in Norway last month, the brand’s best result in over two years, while VW registered 1,956 vehicles.
Tesla‘s Model Y was the best-selling model in the country for the fourth consecutive month, with a record high of 5,004 units sold.
It was followed by Toyota’s BZ4X and Volkswagen‘s ID.4, which represented 825 and 714 units, respectively.
