BYD Launches Hybrid Version of Atto 2 in Europe, Its Most Affordable SUV

China’s giant automaker BYD has officially launched the hybrid version of its Atto 2 model in Europe, nearly ten months after the local debut of the fully electric version on the continent.

The Atto 2 DM-i debuted in Spain, where it will be priced from €18,190 ($21,000) — about €2,000 above the battery electric (BEV) version, which starts at €15,990.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has 150 km (93 miles) of electric range and a combined range of 1000 km (621 miles).

Named Yuan Up in its domestic market, the hybrid version now launched in Europe is not available in China.

According to Executive VP Stella Li, the new version was introduced in Europe based on user feedback over the past months.

The Atto 2 was introduced in Europe in February. By then, the company said it would be the “most accessible SUV” on the continent.

Upon the launch of the model in the Old Continent, BYD also stated that a Comfort trim would be launched in the third quarter of 2025.

The Atto 2 Comfort version was introduced in the same event last week. It is priced from €20,990 and it reaches 604 km (375 miles) of electric autonomy.

While the fully electric Atto 2 was introduced in both Europe and the UK, it is not yet clear whether (or when) the plug-in hybrid trim will be available in the market.

As of Monday, the model is not yet available on local European websites.

BYD in Spain

BYD expanded its passenger vehicle lineup to the Iberian Peninsula — including both Spain and Portugal — in early 2023.

The Chinese carmaker partnered with three local dealers — Astara, Quadis, and Caetano Retail Spain.

Caetano Retail Spain is a part of the Salvador Caetano group, a Portuguese automotive giant that also represents the brand in Portugal.

It entered the Spanish market with the cheaper BYD Atto 3 SUV and the more expensive Tang SUV and Han sedan.

Since then, the Han has been removed from the portfolio, with the only sedan now featured in the Spanish lineup being the Seal model.

BYD Spain features eight fully electric models and three hybrid ones (excluding the new Atto 2), most of them being SUVs.

The Dolphin Surf, which launched in mid-2025, is the cheapest model in the lineup, starting from €11,780.

All the prices mentioned exclude the Value Added Tax (VAT), which pushes the prices above €20,000.

According to data from the platform EU-EVs, BYD has sold 12,710 hybrid and fully electric vehicles in Spain from January 1 to November 24.

The company is nearly outperforming Tesla, which has registered 13,764 EVs in the country year-to-date.

Upcoming Factory

In October, Reuters reported that BYD, which has set up local production in Hungary and Turkey, is considering Spain for its third European factory.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Spain was favoured due to its relatively low manufacturing costs and clean energy network.

Last week, a BYD Portugal executive revealed that Spain’s neighbor was also under consideration.

“There are contacts done directly by BYD in Portugal due to the advantageous conditions of the country,” Pedro Cordeiro stated, citing the lithium factory in Sines being constructed by the Chinese battery maker CALB.
