Registrations of battery-electric vehicles (BEV) dropped by 43.9 per cent to 92,627 units resulting in a market share drop to 14.4 per cent from 21 per cent a year ago.
Hybrid vehicles were the only segment to register growth in August, with a 6.6 percent increase year over year, reaching 201,552 units.
Europe’s biggest automotive markets, Germany and France, led the declines with 68.8 per cent and 33.1 per cent drops, respectively. In a statement, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) said the figures send “an extremely worrying signal to industry and policymakers”.
Additionally, ACEA urged the European Commission to “bring forward the CO2 regulation reviews for light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles” from 2026/27 to 2025.
Year to date, more than 900,000 fully electric vehicles (902,011) were registered in Europe, representing 12.6 per cent of the market.
Plug-in hybrid car registrations saw a -22.3 per cent decrease last month with their market share declining 7.1% from 7.4 per cent in August 2023.
In a reaction to the tariffs on China-made EVs, ACEA has recently reiterated the critical role of free and fair trade in enabling a globally competitive European automotive industry.
“What the European automotive sector needs above all else to be globally competitive is a robust industrial strategy for electromobility,” said Sigrid de Vries, Director of ACEA.
