Rivian-VW JV Adopts Amazon Tech for Real Time Video Protection

Rivian and Amazon have expanded their ongoing partnership, with the EV maker adopting Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology for real-time security across its vehicles.

The technology from Amazon‘s cloud computing platform will be implemented through the joint venture between Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies — also known as ‘RV Tech’.

Amazon and Volkswagen are currently the largest shareholders in the US company, as both have invested on its software with different approaches.

The retail giant was a major investor in Rivian in 2019, placing an order for 100,000 electric delivery vans, scheduled for delivery by 2030.

As of the latest update in late October, the retail giant has deployed 30,000 Rivian EDVs in its fleet.

Meanwhile, Rivian and Volkswagen entered a partnership late last year, according to which the German automaker agreed to invest $5.8 billion in the EV maker as it adopts Rivian‘s zonal architecture and software stack in its future electric vehicles.

Real-time Video

An article published on Wednesday, co-signed by several engineers working on RV Tech and representatives from AWS, announced that the two entities are partnering to deploy Kinesis Video Streams (KVS).

Previously, Rivian‘s ‘Gear Guard,’ a set of features aimed at protecting the vehicle when the owner is not around, detected suspicious activity using on-vehicle cameras and AI, with all data stored locally for privacy.

The system now supports real-time video streaming to the Rivian app, giving owners immediate visual access during incidents.

For that, Rivian uses Amazon‘s KVS, combined with web real-time communication (WebRTC), providing secure, scalable streaming with low-latency, two-way audio/video and reliable connection signaling.

Additionally, no video is stored on Rivian or AWS infrastructure, protecting owner privacy while delivering a reliable real-time experience.

RV Tech

Although the article does not specifically mention the Volkswagen Group beyond the joint venture, this technology will likely be integrated into the software Rivian provides for the automaker’s vehicles, including features like Rear Guard.

The software will be first launched on the upcoming Rivian R2. It will then be included within a selected range of models from Volkswagen Group‘s brands — including Volkswagen, Audi and Scout Motors.

Earlier this month, upon the first anniversary of the joint venture, Rivian‘s Software Chief and RV Tech co-CEO, Wassym Bensaid, said the architecture concepts for the first vehicles from VW have been finished.

The information was revealed just a few hours after the German automaker announced that engineering prototypes of the ID.1 are already undergoing testing at RV Tech’s facilities in California.

Production of the compact vehicle is expected to begin in 2027.

According to Bensaid, the joint venture could eventually create software for the wider automotive industry.
